Vintage Modern Mix-Up

DSC_0208

Nothing strikes my fancy more than mixing my vintage treasures with some of my more modern pieces in my wardrobe.  Putting together my outfits can usually be as fun as piecing together a puzzle of different eras and styles!!  You should head on over to Virginie's Cinema to read my tips on how to incorporate vintage pieces with modern day wears.

Guest post: Tieka

Hi everyone! Tieka here from Selective Potential! I was so excited when Emily asked me to do a guest post for her... especially on music! It's not something I typically post about on my blog, but music is a huge part of our lives. My husband has played in bands ever since he was 14 and I've watched bands ever since I was 14. It's just something we've always loved and something we're both really passionate about!

We also live in a great city that has an amazing punk community. We grew up with the most amazing all-ages venue, where we'd spend every weekend. We are also insanely fortunate to have the best record shop! I can't even count on my hands the amount of venues around here that we grew up going to!

Brett and I started a new band called Circle Maybe with some of our friends last November and it has been so much fun. We are in the process of recording now and have only played a few shows, but this is just the beginning of something truly wonderful. We've met all of our friends through shows and music... Brett and I even met through music! He was a drummer in a band... and I thought he was so cute, so I stalked him... and eventually got him to fall in love with me ;)

I hope you enjoyed my music-inspired post! It's one thing that I really love about Emily - our shared interest of music. We both love the same style of music and can talk about amazing bands like The Get Up Kids together! Hope she enjoyed her little blog-cation!

Guest Post: Emily

Well hello dear Daily Fashionista readers! We probably haven't met yet, but in any case I'm the other Emily and I write a little blog by the name of Nudgenick Loves Twinkle Lights. Like you I'm a huge fan of Emily and have been reading her blog for quite some time. So naturaly when she asked me if I wouldn't mind posting for her while she's off, I was beyond excited/honored/geeking out a bit. And to make things even more fun, Emily asked her guest bloggers to create a post that surrounded music. Sign me up!

I've long been a lover of music and one of my favorite aspects of music is going to shows-- namely summer concerts. While I give totally props to fellow concert goers who trek out in the snow to go see a show, there's nothing quite like being at a show in the summer. I've really started to think that there's something in the air! Whether it's a show that you have to take a boat to get to (see Passion Pit @ Governors Island '10S), spread a blanket for, or a festival like Warped Tour or Lollapalooza, summer concerts have it going on!

I was so upset that I hardly saw a show last semester, so when I knew that I was going to be in New York City for the summer, I immediately started looking through concerts throughout the tri-state area. Just an aside, if you're looking for some good indie concerts, you must check out the sites Oh My Rockness and Eventful.  Last night I saw The Decemberists and Best Coast as part of the Celebrate Brooklyn series and they were both amazing, despite the rain.

While I love concerts, sometimes I find it difficult to balance looking cute with being practical. For example, at any concert you're bound to get your feet stepped on or insanely dirty, so what do you do? Wear those cute flats you've been waiting to pull out or pick canvas sneakers you've had for a while? Everyone has a different answer to this question and ones like it and while it's not for me to tell you what to do, I can say that in almost every case, I take comfort and function over something that might be a little bit cuter. I say this because I've made my fair share of mistakes and have cleaned many a dirty feet and I don't want to go back there! And looking cute and being functional is totally achievable, you just have to think a bit. Look at every piece you want to wear with a scrupulous eye and take into consideration the concert that you're going to (location, weather, length, sitting/standing/both, etc...). If you do those things, I know you'll make a wise decision.

And we can take last night as the perfect example for how to pick an outfit. I knew that it was going to be at a park and therefore, I'd probably want to bring a blanket, all of which implies an outfit that is easy to move it.  Coming straight from the office totally impacted what I wore, so I decided to go with a very flexible jersey dress and sneakers, with minimal but impacting jewelry. Now because it was a park I had many other options for footwear. But when I heard that it was supposed to rain I went with something that I wouldn't care if it got wet. Now why didn't I wear my boots? Well I took a chance. I was coming from work and didn't feel like being in my wellies all day. In this case the risk was definitely worth it because we were sitting the whole time it rained and luckily Prospect Park did not turn in to the next Woodstock.

Thank you so much for your time, it's been lovely!!

Guest Post : Morgan and Lua

Hi! I'm Morgan from Morgan and Lua.
When Emily asked us to guest post, she also asked that our posts be either inspired by a favorite song, or were in some way music related. I knew almost immediately what I would do. I decided to combine two of my favorite things, The Beatles and my dog Lua, in an outfit post.  I based my post around The Beatles song, Two of Us. I tried to give a nod to the laid back hippy style that was happening during the time the song was written.
I found Lua at WARL, a no kill Shelter outside of DC. I was a volunteer there when Lua was brought in. I had always known I wanted a dog and a few months earlier I had even started to look for my own, but I never expected to fall in love with a puppy at the shelter so quickly.
Over the past three years I've had Lua she has become such a huge part of my life. They always say dogs are a man's best friend and I wouldn't dispute that one bit. Lua is my buddy. She tries her best to please me and I try my best to take care of her.
We've lived in a few different places together. We started off in DC and wound our way back to New York City. I'm not used to being without her. When we are together we really are inseparable. I take her every place I possibly can. She sleeps next to my bed, comes to work with me everyday, is my running partner in the afternoons, and is by my side each night as we wind down the days. Whether it's beneath my desk at work or wedged between the coffee table and sofa at my apartment Lua can often be found lounging right under my feet.
Our relationship is obviously very different than the one represented in Two of Us. At its core the song is about friendship. Like I said, Lua is my buddy. We've been through a lot together. Moves, health issues, the occasional disagreement, all of it. At the end of the day, we take care of each other. She'll always have my back and I'll always have hers. And for right now, it really is just the two of us.

Emily, thank you so much for asking me to guest post. I hope you're having an amazing and relaxing break from the bloggity!

You can find me on my blog, Morgan and Lua, where I write about my style, my life, and of course Lua!

Summer Vacation

forever21

So long!!   Farewell!!  Auf Wiedersehen, adieu!!  I bet I got that Sound of Music song stuck in your head now:) hehehe...  I'm saying farewell, but not goodbye because I'm taking a bit of a blogging break starting tomorrow until June 18.  A whole week!!  But do not fret!  I have lined up some awesome blogger friends to help me out during my mini hiatus/vacation...who I might add, I am soooo thankful for!  So be ready for some fantastic guest posts and even a giveaway to break up my hiatus!!!  I can't really stay away from the internet that long.

For my final look before vacation I took it in a very summery direction.  It was 110 degrees outside with the heat index and I basically wanted to get away with wearing as little clothing as possible.  I thrifted this amazing peach colored summer dress a couple of weeks ago and it finally made its debut!  The embroidery is fantastic and I actually found the color really complimenting to my skin tone.  Plus it makes me hungry for fresh peach pie.  hehehe..

The only accessories I could muster on this hot day was a necklace and a pair of sunnies.  I was a little bummed over the heat too because it practically melted all my pretty curls I achieved from sleeping with my hair wrapped in rags.  Oh well, I'm sure I'll do the rag curls again!  I loved the look of them:)
