A Peek Inside

desk3

After getting home late from a tiring day at work, I didn't have much time to head out to the outdoors for a photo shoot. Why not use the better part of my home? There are certain areas in our little apartment that are really just for me. This little corner is my crafting /writing area and I take good pride in making it look pretty. I find terribly kitchy paintings and nail them on up, than I find weirdo little trinkets to set upon my desk. I love changing it up so much!

And how behind am I on 30 for 30 Challenge? I'm only on remix 24, while most others are already done! I would be done, but some of my outfits were erased from my memory card, so that kind of sucks. I'm back on track though. I decided to try a little scarf turban in my hair today, which gave me that little something extra. I found the scarf in the thriftstore and couldn't resist the pretty pattern and the colors of blue. There were so many scarves to choose from, but I just had to have this one. I'm looking forward to putting together more looks with it!

A Super Fantastic Saturday!

coffee3

Ok, Remix Number 23! Hit me with your best shot! This was so easy to put together, since all of my other remix clothes were dirty. Thank goodness these pieces actually matched! So even though I haven't posted all 30 of my outfits, I have officially gone about 35 days without buying a single piece of clothing. Since, I technically went 35 days without shopping, I felt it was time to treat myself to the wonders of the thriftstore. And boy did I treat myself! I went bananas! Here is the evidence of my fruitful treasure hunts.

treasures

At the suggestion of my friend/neighbor, I decided to take her and our friend to the Goodwill Outlet in Virginia Beach. Let me tell you! That place is one crazy cluster f**k. Just so ya'll know. I knew the clothes were going to be in bins and whatnot, but I didn't realize that the clothes wouldn't even be organized by gender. That was the hardest part. I'd find some awesome denim peeking out from the bin only to discover it was a man's size 38 waist pair of jeans. Bummer! But I did come away with some awesome goodies. Then we hit up Thrift Store USA and I was whisked away in blouse heaven! Buy One Get One Free! Yippie! I needed some new blouses desperately and was enamored by all the pretty patterns and colors. After the thrifting adventures with my friends, I still had to meet another friend for some mall shopping.

We met at Plato's Closet (which was sort of a bust) and then made our way to the Goodwill store across the street. Guess what I found?!! A Zac Posen for Target blouse! $4! Can't beat that! Not even with a stick! Then we headed to Marshalls. I was in love with so many things in there, but I couldn't afford most of it. That place is quite pricey compared to thrift stores. Oh and we never made it to the malls, but that's best saved for a day after payday.

Feelin' Good

good

I believe that Remix Number 22 is my absolute favorite to date! The striped top with the black pants almost looks like a mime outfit, but once I added the heels and blue necklace it took on a whole different feel. I felt feminine, pretty and stylish. Sometimes I hope that all my outfits will make me feel that way, but there are the usual doldrums days, where I'm just in a blah mood and nothing I wear makes me feel good. But that's more in my psyche than in the clothes I wear. I'm sure we all have days like that. But this day was anything but.

Zach and I were once again heading to the farmers market to eat dinner with yet, another friend. It's just so easy to get our dinner from there. Instead of making my own I figured it's just easier to buy our 2 for $10 meals. I'm vegetarian and Zach is not, so cooking two meals a day isn't really something we care to do. So, as we were eating our dinner we saw these crazy storm clouds moving in. Just another reason why this day was so great. We got to watch the most awesome thunder storm. I love opening up the windows and letting the loud thunder and lightening fill our apartment. The sound of rain and the wind gusts coming through our apartment makes it feel like a perfect summer evening. Especially when it cools off our apartment without the use of air conditioning.

Noticing the Remix

out3

So I'm now on outfit number 21 for the 30 for 30 Challenge and my co-workers finally noticed I was wearing the same clothes, day after day. It was pretty funny because I was wearing my dress as a skirt and one of my co-workers came up to me and said, "You got that as a skirt too!" I had to explain how it came about as a skirt and not a dress and they looked at me like I had two heads! I remember a year ago I would have never thought I could do that with a dress!

Aside from the amusement of my co-workers, I also wanted to wear something that would look good for a day at work and transition into happy hour. Zach and I were going to visit our friend from Kansas, who is visiting during her break, so we wanted to meet up with her and her beau for a little dinner and drinks. We met up with them at our little hangout dinner spot at the Farmer's Market and they enjoyed some yummy bbq while I ate an awesome veggie/bean salad with chilled cantaloupe soup. It was pretty awesome. And then we headed to the Taphouse for beers. I went all Mad Men and ordered a Heineken and found out I hate that beer. I should've stuck with my standby and ordered a Michelob Ultra instead...hehe

Carefree and Breezy

breezy3

Hello Number 20!! It's the 20th of 30 outfits that I must complete for the 30 for 30 challenge! This outfit took a little more thought, since I knew I'd be doing a lot of walking during the day. It was one of the nicest days of summer, so I knew I'd be walking a lot. Something very carefree and breezy would need to fit the bill and this pretty chambray skirt and blue tank did just the trick. It was also a great item to be worn on Zach and I's 1 mile trek to our Taco Tuesday dinner.

So, how many of you other remixers out there are already deciding what you'll buy after this shopping ban is lifted? I already have my heart set on a new pair of black flats, since mine bit the dust, but other than that I haven't found anything I had to have. Plus, with such a small closet it feels a little more easy to get up in the morning and survey my closet for about a minute before I have something planned for the day. But I do know that some of these items will need to be put away for a while. I'm sick of looking at some of the items I picked for the 30 for 30 challenge...hehehe..

But this skirt is certainly not one of them!

Set for the Seas

sailor5

Let me just take a minute here and breathe in some fresh cool air!!! That's right! I finally don't live on the surface of the sun, and I can enjoy some layering in my wardrobe! hehehe... I absolutely adored this outfit when I put it on and I think the blazer was the icing on the cake. I think it's pretty good for Remix Number 19! I'll admit, I'll be a little sad when this 30 for 30 thing is all over.

sailor4

sailor6

Oh, and apparently I reminded my friend of a sailor in this getup! I was really amused with myself for creating a sailor inspired outfit and not even realizing it! It actually reminded me of an outfit I put together a few years ago with knee length shorts, a striped t-shirt, and some flip flops and I was mistaken for Smee from Peter Pan. And I will never live that down...at least amongst my friends.

sailor

sailor2

So now I can say I've dressed as a sailor and pirate and it wasn't even Halloween or anything?! I wonder what other costumes I can get away with during the summer months? Hmm...maybe next weekend I'll be a train conductor or a pilot.

The One and Only....Merl!!!

merl2

If there is one thing I admire about people it's their drive and passion. Merl is a one of a kind funny lady who has a spark for finding the right amount of cool to make an awesome statement necklace or ring, or whatever accoutrement she desires to make. If you have never visited her blog, please do! Her writing is funny, witty, and a tad on the crass, but that's what people love about her. She'll tell it like it is! So without further ado, I'd like to introduce you guys to my Blogger of the Month feature! I chose Merl for all the reasons above and I'd like everyone to get to know her.

bannerjuly

What kind of job did you have before you started you own business? What inspired you to pursue jewelry design full time?

I worked at a local photography company here in Madison that specializes in sports, and graduation photography. Think back to your high school days when you got posed sport photos.. exactly. I absolutely loved the people I worked with, but the scheduling and subjects were driving me insane. I began tinkering around one weekend while visiting my parents, and started piecing together necklaces and bracelets from vintage materials and when I got a great reaction, I figured why not?' When I got back to Madison, I sourced more materials and opened my etsy store, and with a good number of sales under my belt, I decided to quit my other job and give it a real go.

merl4

Where does you inspiration come from? Your pieces always seem to have a
story behind them.

Honestly, one of my biggest inspirations is The Glamourai. She creates these incredible masterpieces, and though she has years of experience and training on me, watching her unleash her creativity in such a tangible way spurred me to create my own one of a kind pieces. One of the best parts of venturing out on my own has definitely been the freedom to run things how I see fit. And that includes coming up with the descriptions for each piece. Since they are one of a kind, they obviously have a life of their own.. and isn't it more fun to read about a dream scenario where you can picture yourself rocking the crap out of the piece rather than a boring measurement and material description? As far as the inspiration.. you should see my doodle pad. Let's be kind and simply say I can't draw. However, at lot of times I'll get a rough sketch of a new piece, and then tweak it substantially once I start designing with real materials, mostly for practicality's sake. Sometimes I think a chain or stone will just float on it's own, and get upset when I remember that thing called gravity.

merl5

How would you rate your happiness, now that you work at home and
basically work at your own schedule? How would you rate your kittie's happiness now that you spend more time at home?....(I had to throw that one in there since it seems like your kitties are like your children).

Ahhh the universal happiness rating system.. ranging from: Estatic!!! to eating ice cream while sitting in front of the fridge. I would say that during every week, I hit about every notch in between and including the polar opposites. When something sells, I jump for joy. When it's a slow week, I can be found laying on the floor whining to the cats and questioning my decision to begin this seemingly fruitless endeavor. Perhaps more emotionally stable people starting their own business have a better handle on things, but I'm quite mercurial when it comes to how I feel. It's also been hard to establish set hours of operation. I absolutely abhor alarms and have sleep issues as it is, so my days don't have a set start time, but often I'll be busy designing, listing, emailing, or blogging until 8-9 at night when the M gets home. I find that I am the happiest working on the weekends strangely enough. There's no pressure to keep busy, and I can take as many HGTV breaks as I deem fit without a feeling of guilt. The kitties are basically on Cloud 9 these days. Clyde can usually be found occupying the limited feet space under my desk, while Mo is spread eagle in the middle of the floor. The M's cat is hidden from all, because she is still suffering single child syndrome and likes to make us suffer with her absence.

merl 3

What fears have you triumphed as a result of creating your own business?

As far as the fears go.. the business side is one giant looming beast over my shoulder. In a perfect world, all I would have to worry about is the fun sourcing, designing, photograhing and listing side. However, I don't much feel like getting audited so that means keeping diligent records and receipts, and employing an accountant who can understand numbers and what to do with them. I have a nasty habit of putting off things that aren't enjoyable, but finally getting the scary business side of my company in order allows me to sleep at night.

Ok, ya'll so that's Merl!!!! Please be sure to check out her awesome blog Clyde's Rebirth!!! And also her amazing Etsy store

Here's my new piece from her collection.
