A Thrifting Fairy Tale

day4c

Once again, the thrift gods have smiled upon me!!  My local favorite thrift haunt had a Groupon a couple of weeks ago and I snagged it within seconds of receiving my email from Groupon.  So like most things with cash value, it was burning a hole in my pocket, so on Sunday I trotted my way down to Thrift Store USA to see what I could find and I found so many wonderful things.  Including these super comfy, never worn a day in their life, Cole Haan loafers.  I seriously giggled like an evil villian when I discovered my find and then threw them into my basket before anyone could notice.  Oh and they were only $6!!  So that's my thrift story of the week;)

Alrighty, so the rest of my outfit is a menagerie of different thrift finds.  This pretty french terry dress felt like a million bucks when I was riffling through the racks at another thrift store.  To my complete surprise it was actually from Charlotte Russe.  Usually I avoid that store like the plague because I always find the construction and quality to be crap, but this dress was a completely different story.  To add a vintage flair to it, I added my 1950s floral cardigan.

Oh and never in my life have I received more compliments on a piece of jewellery!!  This necklace from In Pink came to me a few weeks ago and I was waiting to find the perfect outfit for it.  The scoop neck from the dress seemed fitting so I threw it on.  It is quite the eye catching piece seeing as it's beads are very large, but its eye catching in a good way.  Plus the older ladies who came to visit me at work were mesmerized by the fact that it wasn't vintage.  If you're in the market for a good piece of costume jewellery I definitely suggest looking into In Pink.

On the Mend

day6

Today was warm but rainy and I decided it was a great day to try out my newly hemmed dress.  I bought this paisley tent dress from a thrift store about 3 months ago and it was a horrible length.  Dowdy is a more appropriate term of the shape of this garment.  A couple of days ago I finally decided to stop being lazy and get going on my hem pile.

There's no excuse for leaving a mountain of clothes to mend, for months on end, but apparently I'm just a super busy lady...haha, yeah right.  So I guess I can tell you the best part about finishing up a mend pile is you basically get a whole new wardrobe!  You can add a new look to old clothes, or just change up some thrifted items you had lurking in your closet.

So with my newly hemmed dress on I felt it was a great day for thrifting.  And what's better than being greeted by the shop keeper at a thriftstore with a huge bag to fill for $10?!  Pretty much nothing!!  I can't tell you how awesome it felt to buy all sorts of great items that I needed for a huge discount.  If I hadn't been there with my hubby I would've spent another hour there, but I could tell he was getting impatient with me.  I'm a hunter and seeker and need so much time to lament on what I need versus what I don't need.  Plus, I was also looking for things for my friends.  This was also the first time I ever went to a thrift store that allowed a "fill a bag" deal.  I wish all thrift store were like that!  haha!!

Closet Purge Reveals a Find

day16

When I found this dress at a cute little boutique in NYC I knew I had to have it.  It's handmade from stiff fabric and I love the shape of the dress.  I only bought it for it's look.  It didn't fit at all, so I was going to give it to Goodwill, but then I remembered I had lost some weight from all the walking I've been doing and it fit!  Thank goodness it did!  It fits perfectly now, and I don't feel like I wasted a bunch of money!!  The style of the dress is a throw back to the 60s, and the cowl neck is the perfect little detail that made me fall in love with it.

So I guess my closet purging is becoming more of a reward to myself!! haha!!  Totally not the point of closet purging, but all that hard work really did deserve a new dress that I can wear.  My closet purge was also fruitful in another way, but I'll talk about that another day.  I'm adding a new segment for my year long thrift adventure, so stay tuned!!

Thrifty Land

I wish I could play a version of real life Candy Land (only it would be Thrifty Land) and I would go to the magical places like (The Lair of the Lamps) and find a tremendous fiberglass lamp shade, or (Designer Duds Dunes) and find all sorts of fabulous dresses and blouses. I have such a long list of things I have to have, whether they be antiques, vintage or new. I've been stalking Etsy for so long and I just keep getting this nagging feeling that I might be able to find the same thing while thrifting. But I guess my thriftstores just aren't that fab, or my friend 'D' snags something we're both looking for the day before I get there. Story of my life! Well today was pretty fruitful! I got there right after nine and the first thing I laid my eyes on was a brand new with tags Rodarte for Target dress!!!! I die! Plus it was my size so that was a bonus:) Then a perfect new pair of Gap skinny jeans, black patent heels, and a new spring skirt that will make it's debut for Easter. Unfortunatley, no lamp shade, no enamel ware, and no picture frames.

And for my errands I decided jeans would be my easy go-to item. They're comfy and all together it was a nice casual outfit. When I'm doing a lot of bending over and rummaging through tons of crap, I find I prefer jeans, since I won't flash anyone. It just makes sense to me.

Oh and last night Zach and I did something spontaneous and went to a bar/lounge to see a band we never heard of, but man we're they good!!! An Horse is doing a US tour right now until March 30 and if they happen to be in your neck of the woods you should check them out. And the bar was pretty sweet too. Very laid back, nice people and they specialize fish tacos.

Hangin' With A Friend

Today was especially a good day to enjoy some company with my friend 'D'. She is my shopping buddy and it was really needed it after a day like today. I left work early, which was nice, but it was one of those hectic days where I felt sorry for myself the whole time. Basically, I messed something up at work and it took lots of people and lots of time to put things back the way they should be. It just stinks when you make a mistake, which turns into other mistakes.

But the afternoon was better. My friend and I had lunch together at a nice little restruant and then enjoyed a few hours shopping at an antique store and the Salvation Army. Shopping usually puts me in a great mood and we were laughing our butts off when we discovered a FABULOUS jumpsuit made from terrycloth and zippers down the shoulder. I wish one of us had the guts to put it on and take a picture in it, since you all would probably spit your drink out from laughing! It was just so tragic of a clothing piece it brought tears to your eyes.

So I walked away with a couple of dresses that will be great for the spring and a funky canister set from the 1960s that will be used for flour and sugar.
